Friday Apollo

Where I live, in between Denver and the foothills, we got about 20 inches of snow over the past two days. This region was pretty much shut down, and so I had plenty of time to shoot Apollo.

I cropped in for some of these pictures so that it's easier to see Apollo.

Here he is searching for the "flinger" (a flexible square frisbee).

And again. To get anywhere, Apollo had to leap every stride. He looked like a rabbit and made me giggle endlessly.

Apollo, the crazy dog that he is, loves to take a break and just chill out - literally - in the snow. Which concerns me a bit because he doesn't have a lot of hair on his groin area...he's kinda naked there, except for hair on his coinpurse. Ahem. I worry about frostbite. Maybe I should get him a coat? He'd look damned silly, though...But humiliating him is so fun!

I showed the above picture to a friend of mine, and this is what he had to say:

"He's like: "Hey! Hey mom! Hey! I'm freezing! Haha! I'm freezing my nuts off! If I had nuts, anyway! Hahaha!"

I have weird friends.

Red Rocks Park

Apollo and I ventured out there to check out the snow in the mountains. We were not disappointed. It's only 10 minutes from me, so I'm sure we'll be heading that way quite often.

Snow day

Cameras - digital cameras, especially - like to underexpose snow (more on this in a later post) so this originally came out dark. Cameras also have a hard time photographing true white - even when your settings are properly set - so this came out pretty blue too. I tweaked this picture so it was lighter and truer to its actual light settings. Then fiddled with the tone so it was less blue. I actually was able to get it really close to true-white, but the values for the trees, branches and so on were a little off. After some reflection, I decided I liked it somewhere in middle - a bit blue, but not smurf blue. It feels very wintry and stark, but somehow at the same time, it makes me feel like a kid. I want to jump into that scene and make snow angels.

More people, more scars upon the land

The bright spring green you see is the fragile plant life that is also at risk of being exterminated. People are strongly discouraged from walking on them, for fear that they are irreparably damaged. I did touch it with my hand and found that it felt like how it looked - as soft as puppy's fur or a newborn's blanket.

And he lost a friend but kept his memory

The REAL Pikachu. They are endangered.
Pikachu and some other creatures and plants residing at the very tiptops of the mountains - and ONLY there - are threatened or endangered now. Their biology is so sensitive to any temperature changes that any changes in the norms has a devastating effect on them.
