DC Metro Crash

Report covering the crash: body count as of this post is now at 9.

A lot of people have contacted me asking about this. Some answers:
No, that train line isn't the one I took for work. I rode the orange line.
Yes, I had ridden red before.

As awful as it sounds, I am very surprised this hasn't happened sooner. These trains were supposed to have been retrofitted or replaced a long time ago, but the Metro Transist people kept crying that they were broke and couldn't do it.

I was in DC only two years and encountered events like:
Doors that didn't close all the way while we were in motion.
Being stuck on a train for two hours due to mechanical failure
Trains losing power intermittently, on one occasion, for an half hour. No lights, no AC, no radio, nothing. That really sucked because we were underground and I couldn't even talk to the other passengers.
Being stuck in the train station waiting for a train for 2-3 hours - and the metro folks on duty refused to tell anyone anything other than "it'll be here soon." They are supposed to bring in shuttle bus when this happen.

I also heard about an incident where the radio system failed on one particular line and the drivers had to use walkie talkies to communicate with each others. Walkie talkies...in underground tunnels - real safe.

Even though I'm no longer a DC resident, this pisses me off. Metro Transit system gets a considerable chunk of stipend from the gov't, gets $$ from various funds and grants, tax breaks from donations to charities (to the tune of several million) all in addition to the fares from millions of people who use the trains. It recently got a fare increase that was supposed to help pay for retrofitting of the trains and maintenance AND I believe, it also got a chunk of change from Obama's stimulus bill. The fact that all of the money is (supposedly) funneled into maintenance and paying workers tells me that it is costing more to maintain than to upgrade the transit system. That's assuming the money is going where it's supposed to.

This should never have happened. EVER. If any form of public transit system is failing or in act of failing, to the point where human lives are at risk, fix it instead of just slapping a bandaid on it. I realize the logistics of maintaining trains and tracks while simultaneously acquiring the new trains is problematic, but no human life is worth this. Borrow, beg, whatever you have to do. Fix the damn problem, stop making excuses and get the new trains.

That's my two cents.

Metro guy

OK, I got a little carried away. I couldn't decide what to do to "fix" the guy. So, inspired by his faux fur collar, I decided to play around a bit with colors and tried to make him into "early 90s punk-meets-metrosexual man." The hard part was, because his hair is tousled, I couldn't tint it without it looking artificial. If you look at the large version, you should be able to spot my shoddy job of tinting his hair a bit more easily. He obviously got lipstick and eyeliner as well, I think that looks pretty realistic. I also tweaked the tones so he isn't so yellow and got rid of his stubbles. I tried to whiten the whites of his eyes, but something went weird, so it looks pretty fake to me, I think. Oh well!

What I did: Tweaked the tones so the chick wasn't so yellow, got rid of errant flyaway hair, smoothed her hair so that it looked a little more groomed/styled and got rid of skin discolorations. That's all. Didn't put a lot of work into this.

I wonder what she was thinking.

Seen on the Metro This Morning

A guy reading a chess book.

Think about it. A guy...reading...a chess book. At 8 AM.

Seriously, who reads those things? No less, at 8 o'clock in the morning? Serious nerd.

Uck! Uck!

Coming home on train today, it was a little crowded - but not packed-like-sardines crowded - and I had to stand. No big deal. Bored, I looked around at the people on train, and noticed one guy sitting in one of the rows picking his nose.

No, it wasn't a shallow little scrape. The fine, upstanding gentleman was digging away with his finger up his nose, up to the first knuckle. I watched in horror as the side of his nose stretched and bulged; it reminded me of the scene from Total Recall where Arnie had to pull out a tracking device through his nose.

Then he pulled his finger out. "Good," I thought. A moment too soon. He examined his bounty, then reached out and wiped his finger clean on a woman's bulky jacket collar in front of him.

Say it with me. Uck! Uck!

Avoiding Disasters

It's a common nightmare that two girls will show up to a dance wearing the same dress. I never ran into that problem; however, I nearly did today. This morning, I briefly considered wearing a particular skirt that I love but decided to not to because I didn't have time to shave my legs.

Fast forward to about when my train pulled into my station. As I got up from my seat to get off, I realized a girl standing nearby was wearing the exact same skirt I considered wearing today! Disaster averted!

Someone up there is really watching out for me. Grandma, I'm sure...she always did have a good sense of style.

I'm Pretending to Work

I'm naughty. I never feel like working, but I'm even less enthusatic after I've run a particular work gauntlet, which occurs every other week. I don't like to include overly personal information on here, but friends/family know what I'm talking about. Don't get me wrong, I like working at this company, but there is a certain person who is very high maintenance and just drains my energy.

Enough of that self-pity-work-sucks crap.

Some photography ideas:
-Ms. KS's superduper special assignment, which I have decided must be completed outdoors.
-Photo series:

  • Letters
  • Signs
  • Manholes
  • Jewelry in knots
  • Action
  • Cars
  • Matches
  • People (weak point)
  • Architecture

Suggestions are welcome.

I need to expand/improve my portfolio. Hrm.

In other news, I saw Resident Evil: Extinction the other night. I'm usually pretty critical of flicks and have low expectations of horror/thrillers. Surprisingly, I liked it pretty well, though there were several parts they could've improved on. Or omitted. As usual.

Observed on Metro this Morning:
Several people have this annoying habit of hanging onto the posts or overhead rails with their dear life...even when the train is not in motion.

Why is that annoying? That habit makes it really hard to squeeze by when I'm trying to get off the train, and requires me to say, "Excuse me, I need to get by," or if I haven't had sufficient dose of caffiene..."Let go of the f*cking rail and move!"

Once, there was a particularly large gentlemen who I accidentally helped let go of the rail by stepping on his toes. Accidentally. Honest.

I didn't feel too bad about it though.
